Thornton Roots

I believe I have sorted out the Jacobs in which there are two, where I originally thought them to be three. There is Jacob who remained in Edgefield and Jacob who danced on to Butler Alabama.

Jacob Thornton, from pg. 116a of the 1820 Edgefield census, is age 26-44, born between 1776-94. Also in the household are two Females, age 45+, born before 1775 and a Male and Female, age 19-25, born between 1795-1801. There is also one Female “Slave” age 26-44.

Jacob was born about 1794. The Bond for his estate was posted in Edgefield on 20 Nov 1858¹. He and his wife Martha (LNU)² had the following children; Mary, Elihu M, Ephraim W, Martha Susan, Louisa Matilda and two daughters with the initials, SE and EA.

Jacob Thornton, of the 1830 census in Abbeville SC (pg.59) is age 30-39, born between 1791-1800.

I attribute Jacob of the 1830 Abbeville census with Jacob Thornton, who removed to Butler Alabama by the time of enumerating the 1840 census.

Jacob Thornton of Butler AL, was born on 22 Aug 1798 in Edgefield SC⁷. Jacob married Hannah Smith, also born in Edgefield, 29 Sept 1798⁸. Jacob and Hannah had one known child, Lucretia Jane. Lucretia was born either in Edgefield or Abbeville, 1830⁹.

Now I draw your attention back to the 1830 Abbeville census and point out Frances Thornton, the census line following Jacob (p.59). She is age 50-59 and born between 1771-80. Also appearing in her household are two Males, age 20-29 and age 5-9, and a Female age 10-14.
